How To Mark Queens, Cage Attendants, Manage Mating Nucs
In this video I demonstrate marking queens with a paint pen, getting them into a cage and adding attendant workers to the cage. These cages are California mini cages and are not my favourite to use. I actually prefer to use the JzBz plastic cages but I don't have any right now. I also prefer the cera cell "clam shell" style cage, but I also don't have any of those at the moment.
I also briefly discuss some of the management that goes into these small mating nucs and how they aren't the right solution for all (or even most) beekeepers. But If you were curious about this style, then I hope you learned something.

An Efficient Single Brood Chamber Colony (June 26 Part 1)

In this video I'm taking another look through the scale hives as we prepare for what should be the peak honey flow of my season (but I've been wrong before). Part 1 of 2 because I spent too much time explaining how efficiently this yellow hive is using their space in the brood chamber. Part 2 to follow Follow me on instagram @devan.beekeeper
Not as efficient (June 26 Part 2) Preparing for honey flow

An Easy Way to Split a Double Brood Chamber Bee Hive: Splitting Part 2
Переглядів 102 тис.6 років тому
A very simple method for identifying where your queen is in a double brood chamber colony, without having to sort through all 20 frames and find your queen. This method requires spotting eggs to identify which box the queen is in. Knowing which box the queen is remaining in allows you to add a mated queen or queen cell safely to the queenless box, ensuring your bees will have little down-time a...
Preventing Swarming In The Scale Hives - may 27
Переглядів 35 тис.6 років тому
I go through my typical methods of preventing swarming as the scale hives are bringing in honey and gaining weight. This is preventative maintenance for swarming when they are early in the stages of preparing to swarm. if there were much later stages of queen cells being prepared it may be necessary to go to slightly greater lengths to prevent them from swarming. I actually had a bit more to sa...

What Are Your Bees Doing All Winter? Checking on hives

How many gallons from August 1 (when I pull my honey) to the beginning of sugar brick feeding would you expect to feed if your 10 frame hive was pretty empty on stores.

Hi Devin saw your video..really good. I 've been running double deep to help control hive population. I've seen other vids on single. Brood chamber. But you and others are having to pull brood out regularly to control over population or swarming..and make Nucs or splits. I don't want to make splits or Nucs all the time..are wintering in singles as well? If so how do you provide enough honey to last the winter?

if you didn't have queen confined to one box and had plenty of empty comb for her you wouldn't be having to go through your hives knocking down queen cells, you prevent issues, not waste time fixing problems you created. if a queen is under 2yrs old they will not be inclined to swarm if you keep the honey off them and queen has plenty of room to lay.

misconception: top insulation (>6cm, >2.5inch) = no moisture over bee cluster but running down the sides to the bottom where bees can drink it - like in natural tree cavities! See Prof Tom Seeley: ua-cam.com/video/xIO3F35nlyE/v-deo.htmlsi=GNzggdDYdsXM84iE&t=2774 -- no top entrence!

math also includes: better bred Qs & situation in winter: honey storage + brood/cluster-frames in one box: that's why continental beekeepers have that Langstroth jumbo/Dadant box : 470 x 370 x 295 mm; frame: 480 x 285 mm (after Brother Adam ) and in square 12 frame design to switch position 90degrees of boxes

Sticky boards are not really necessary, just a board will do the trick. Anything falling down is usually dead or not very mobile. If you have any mites on the board? Then you will undoubtedly have hundreds or thousands more in the hive.

@8:00 steal? 😂 you're the one stealing, not the bees. The honey belongs to them. They did all the work.

The problem with single management is it doesn't lend itself well to natural beekeeping. once you remove the supers the bees are starving. There is a limit to what they can put in one box so it requires more inputs like feeding, supplements etc..

Hi from the central Highlands, Victoria Australia 👋. We don’t use queen excluders and find that over winter, the colony survives by positioning centrally between the upper and lower boxes. If the Spring is colder, we may extract less honey (over the season), but we haven’t lost a colony over winter. Thanks for your post- it’s interesting 👍

I'm my opinion (and others) your better to move queen box and put new nuc where mother colony was, that way you get foragers coming back to original location to keep up bee population since they won't have a laying queen for a month

I did the single thru the winter with out the excluder and a super worked great. However whats the trick for the rest of the year? Every time I get brood like the video they swarm and then stop taking honey up and fill the bottom box with honey and I'm back to deeps as supers as I have to checkerboard them. I have 2 hives that the queens never made it back or failed in the beginning of the flow. I even did splits. Is there something I'm missing?

I have only ever used a single brood box, I don't know of anyone within the club that uses 2 brood boxes, it makes managing the bees and their conditions much easier with one box
